This one’s for all you popup camper owners. Now that fall weather has finally arrived in most parts of the country, it’s time to start thinking about winterizing your popup camper. This “how to” guide will cover what you need to know about getting your camper ready for storage over the winter.

Your pop-up camper is an investment you have made in the long term comfort and camping fun for your family. A Pop-Up is a nice compromise between the discomfort and bother of tent camping while retaining the feel of “roughing it”. It is also a nice compromise in a more comfortable camping experience while avoiding the large costs of buying and maintaining a full sized camper.

But like any other type of camping equipment, you must think about maintenance to your pop-up each year so it will store safely during the down months when you will not be camping. Many ask, “When is the best time to winterize my pop-up?” The obvious answer is, “before winter”. The primary goal of winterizing your pop-up is to prepare it to survive the cold winter months without damage. But this annual ritual is also necessary to perform routine maintenance and to be sure that when you open that pop-up for your first camp out of the spring, it is ready to go.

The “when” question is more pertinent to your camping plans than to the weather. When you have completed your last camp out of the fall and are ready to store the pop-up, that would be the ideal time to winterize your unit. If you wait until the first freeze, procrastination or distractions may prevent you from getting the job done in time and if you miss it, you could see damage to your pop-up and the costly repairs that would come with that damage.

So, as a rule, plan your annual maintenance right after your last camp out of the year. You have the fun of that camp out to use as incentive to be sure the pop-up is ready to store. Now, where the pop-up will pass the winter might influence your decisions as you step through your winterizing check list. But even if the pop-up is going to pass the winter in a garage, its best to perform a full winterizing ritual so you have peace of mind that you have been a good pop-up owner.

Your winterizing schedule includes performing needed water removal and replacement to the interior water systems as well as necessary annual maintenance to the pop-up in general. You will no doubt customize this list to your particular pop-up but here is a good starter list.

• Perform a thorough exterior cleaning washing down the unit and inspecting for rust or other damage from the year of camping.
• Perform exterior repairs as needed.
• Perform a thorough interior cleaning making sure you get all food residue up from the floors and beds to keep rodents out and so you don’t open the pop-up next spring to the smell of aging food crumbs.
• Perform interior repairs as needed.
• Remove all nonpermanent items including fishing gear, children’s toys, coffee mugs, pillows or sleeping gear to be cleaned and stored indoors until next year.
• Remove all appliances including left over electronic devices the kids might have forgotten.
• Remove all coolers and food either left out or in storage and discard.
• Remove all garbage and litter.
• Remove any aerosol cans that could rust or rupture due to changing temperatures.
• Lubricate all motorized moving parts.
• Inspect and maintenance wheels, breaks and electrical connections.
• Inspect the underside of the pop-up and repair any holes or other damage from travel.
• Remove and store the battery. Keep the battery charged all winter so it is ready to go when camping begins in the spring.
• Cover any vents with plastic wrap to keep the pop-up airtight and keep insects or other visitors out.
• Inspect the anode rod and replace as necessary.
• Drain all water retention systems including the fresh water tank, the water heater, holding tanks and toilets.
• Drain all pipes by opening the faucets and letting as much water out as possible. Some people will go so far as to blow out the pipes to clean the moisture out as thoroughly as possible. A small amount of water retention is ok but you don’t want the water pipes and tanks full as they could freeze and cause damage to connections.
• Implement hot water heater bypass systems as instructed in your owner’s manual.
• Put nontoxic RV antifreeze into all water lines that you just drained. Be sure you purchase nontoxic antifreeze that you can buy at any camping or RV retail outlet. Do NOT use automobile antifreeze as it is highly toxic and will contaminate your water lines and create a risk to your family the next time you use the unit.

A thorough maintenance and winterizing session will take some time to complete so set aside a Saturday to do a good job performing proper care for your pop-up. Another good reason to perform this maintenance early in the fall, as soon as you are done camping is it gives you time to get any repairs done before the cold weather comes and you can do this work out doors while the temperatures are more tolerable.

You will thank yourself for doing a good job going through your pop-up maintenance and winterizing check list when you open the unit next spring to prepare it for the first camp out of the new year. Your careful attention to he care and storage of your pop-up will assure that it will continue to be a fun and valuable resource for your family’s camping needs for many years to come.

Cooking over an open fire is one of the great experiences of camping out. It’s a unique event in the life of a camp out that simply cannot be replicated by any other vacation or at home pastime. While camp fire cooking requires some preparation and a little bit of skill, it is something that can easily be taught to children. Camp fire cooking offers a wide variety of options and recipes and it will become a high point of any family camp out.

When you think of camp fire cooking, one of the first things you think of is holding that hot dog or marshmallow on a sharpened stick over the fire until it is a little over done or burnt and then eating it while it is still hot. In fact, you probably won’t be able to talk the children out of a weenie roast as one of the often repeated activities of any camp out that involves a camp fire.

Sometimes there is some concern about the sanitary aspects of such an activity. The aspect of roasting hot dogs over the fire does not have to include the use of native sticks that are stuck through the hot dog. You can purchase metal roasters that are custom designed for holding a hot dog or other roastable items to be held over the fire. However, many people find a fun way to get by without that extra expense. Just pack some unpainted wire clothes hangers in your camping supplies. With pliers you can unravel the hanger and straighten it out and it can be used as a fine weenie roaster and thrown away when you are done.

For the “fire warden” in the family, the perfect open fire for roasting hot dogs or marshmallows is a fire that has been going a while so there are some nice mellow coals for those who don’t want to try to work with an open flame. A well seasoned fire is also one that isn’t flaming violently. If the fire is down to a nice mellow blaze, that is a good setting for extending your holder over the heat to cook your dogs.

But for most meals that you will cook in the fire, that bed of coals is the key to successful outdoor cooking. Start an hour or so before you are ready to cook and get the fire going for a while so plenty of embers are built up when you are ready to cook. Another trick is to lay a base of charcoal down as you start the fire and let those coals get good and hot so you have a bed of coals that is easily manipulated.

When it is time to cook, its best to move burning logs to the edge of the fire pit and/or put them out so you don’t have those hot spots to deal with as you cook. If you can build a firewood “wall” around your coals, that can serve to contain the heat and it’s a good use of smoldering logs that can later to stirred up again when its time to return to a burning fire. But even if you have a stable bed of coals, you will need a long handled tong, spatula and barbeque fork so you can manage your food without burning your hands or wrists.

Usually food you cook in the camp fire will be enclosed in aluminum foil to prevent scorching and so your food doesn’t pick up soot and dirt. Get the heavy duty kind so it will survive the trip into and out of the fire. Many items can be cooked without a lot of preparation by just wrapping them in foil and laying them in the coals. Baked potatoes come out great this way as do baked apples. For an extra good taste, remove the apple core, cut a small “plug” to put back in the apple and fill the rest of the tunnel with “red hot: candies. These will melt into the apple for an amazing taste treat. Another old timer’s trick of camp fire cooking is to take a large onion and core it like you would an apple. Fill the middle of the onion with butter and plug the ends and cook it like a baked potato in the fire. The cooked buttery onion will be big camp fire treat to use as a side dish.

Hamburgers and grill items can be cooked over the fire or coals if you brought a grill with small legs on it so you can keep the burgers above the blaze. You can use the grill from your back yard barbeque but you will need to construct a stand for it using firewood so the grill can rest several inches above the fire. Also be mindful of the fat dripping into the fire and the potential of flames. This is another good reason to always keep a bucket of water next to the camp fire at all times.

Most of these ideas are very simple meals but you can use a concept called foil packs to put together a casserole type of meal. A foil pack is an aluminum foil “purse” that you fill with food and put right down in the coals to cook many different items together. You can make the foil pack by laying out a large swatch of aluminum foil and folding it in half. Fold the edges over to seal the ends and at the corners, fold them in and seal the corners so they won’t leak. Leave the top open with a flap that can be closed once the food goes in.

It’s always fun to let people assemble their foil packs before cooking. At the camp site, offer instant rice, soup, butter, seasonings, canned vegetables and precooked meat that people can combine into their pack. You can use your imagination in the types of things you put into foil packs and experiment to create your own recipes. The key to the success of a foil pack is to put plenty of water, soup or some other edible fluid inside so the food doesn’t scorch as you will be putting the foil pack right down into the coals.

When everything is ready, carefully place the foil pack on the coals and let it cook for 20 minutes or so before turning and cooking the other side about the same amount of time. You will need long handled thongs to remove the pack. If you have several people making their own foil packs have everyone put their initials on theirs with a marker so each camper can enjoy their own food. Without fail, they will declare their own foil pack to be the best meal they ever ate.

Camp fire cooking is a passion that you can grow with as you add more recipes and learn from other camper’s new and fun ways to use your campfire for cooking purposes. It isn’t a bad skill to build up just in case you find yourself in a survival situation. But for most of us, the love of camp fire cooking is great because it adds another level of excitement to the camp out and its just good fun.

In my “tip of the week” post last week, I suggested using clothespins to attach lights to the awning of your camper. But not everyone has an awning or wants to attach lights to it so I have another suggestion. String clothesline around your campsite, anchoring it to trees, posts, and your camper; and then attach lights to it using clothespins.

When my family and my sister-in-law’s family camp together we try to get double sites or ones that are next to each other. We then string clothesline between our two campsites and hang lights on it. The kids love having a lighted “path” between the two campsites as they run back and forth during the evening hours, plus there were lots of favorable comments from other campers who thought they looked nice.

It’s fun to take a little time to decorate a campsite and lights serve a two-fold purpose; first of all they look nice and second of all they provide a little low level lighting at night to help you see better and not trip over stones and tree stumps in an unfamiliar campsite.

Most of us know low level solar lighting is a great landscaping tool because lighting can be placed just about anywhere without having to consider if there is electrical access. But have you considered taking solar lighting with you when you go camping?

When I camp at a site right next to a bathroom, I can pretty much count on there being a “unplanned” path from my site to the bathroom that has been worn down by the many people who walked it before me. It’s a perfect place to stick in some solar lights to light that path at night to prevent tripping and falling.

Another example of a good use of solar lighting is when camping in a campsite that has a steep drop-off at the edge. Place solar lights along that side of the site as a reminder to not go any closer to the edge than the lights.

And, my favorite reason for using solar lighting – it’s pretty!

Here’s pictures of some of my favorites. Clicking on the picture will take you to the website for purchasing them if you would like, but they’re not affiliate links. I don’t make any money on the sale if you decide to buy them. I just put the pictures here to give you some idea of the choices available and ones that I think have a “camping” feel to them.

4 Tips For Backcountry Hiking Success

Going hiking into the wilderness for a couple of days can be good for revitalizing yourself and finding time for relection. Having a light weight 2 person tent can be very helpful. Solo backpacking or just going into the woods with a friend can be the basis for lots of terrific memories. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t maintain a few basic rules for your personal safety and care for the environment.

1. Pick The Right Equipment

Taking the correct equipment will make for a much more successful trip. A 2 man tent is an excellent way to go travel light. Often if you have another person, a 2 man tent isn’t big enough for both of you and your gear. Especially if your companion if tall, or large. If you are going solo backpacking, then a two person tent will be perfect for you and your gear.

Another thing that should not be overlooked is having a warm sleeping bag. Even though you checked before leaving you can never count on the weather. Often the temperatures can drop drastically at night or a storm can blow in from no where. After your 2 person tent, the most important thing is that you have a sleeping bag that is appropriate for the time of year you are in.

Basic equipment for camping will also include a tough, spacious backpack, a knife, waterproof matches, first aid kit, cooking utensils, seasonable clothes, and items to handle sanitation.

2. The Right Location To Place Your Two Man Tent

Many a hiking trip has been ruined because a person set up their tent in the wrong place. A high, level area will help you get better sleep, but will also keep you high enough so that any water runoff won’t puddle up and soak into your tent. Never place your tent near the fire. Small sparks can burn holes in the tent, or completely burn it down. Always pitch your tent with the door facing away from the morning sun. You don’t want to walk out into blinding sunlight first thing in the morning. Angle it a little so you still get the heat, but not the intense morning light.

3. Storing Your Food Correctly

Food when hiking is almost as critical as shelter. Stored incorrectly it can quickly spoil or become bug infested. Use air tight containers for food to keep animals from smelling it and invading your campsite. If you have meats, breads, fruits, vegetables, or anything that is perishable, try to keep in a cool place. Be sure to keep your food away from your camp site to avoid attracting any roaming animals that may pass through at night. Do not eat any food in your tent. Any crumbs will attract small animals into your tent.

4. Pack Your Gear Carefully

Packing carefully for your hiking trip will help you to avoid a lot of problems when you are out in the woods. Getting your two man tent, sleeping bag, clothes and gear into a back pack can be a science unto itself. Getting it right will help even the load on your back, and help you keep things light while still carrying all you need.

However, packing up after your trip is also very important. You never want to leave anything behind but footprints. No garbage should ever be left behind and you should carefully bury any waste away from a water source. Always carefully clean your tent and all your camping gear
. Leaving dirt on your tent can cause weak spots and leaks over time. Pack even more carefully was when you leave than when you were going out will pay dividends over time. Taking proper care of your 2 person tent should last for years and years of great camping experiences.

Fun and excitement; both go hand in hand for children looking forward to summer camp activities that come once a year. It is the time where parents get to relax and the children get to meet new friends and have the time of their life.

If you are a parent with kids, chances are that you’d be waiting to send them off to a summer youth camp where they could learn a variety of skills. Summer camp activities are actually quite interesting. Nowadays children are more prone to watching the television, browsing the internet, playing around with friends or simply chatting with them. There’s not much knowledge that one could acquire from it, especially when it comes to leadership and development skills. Many youth camps provide various summer camps activities that help in the development of the child.

In most cases, the summer camp activities include different sessions of adventure games, team building activities, creative sessions, etc. The atmosphere created in the youth camps is ideal for such summer camp activities and tends to bring out the best in every child. New friendships are formed whilst each member gets a boost of self confidence and self esteem when involved with the various summer camp activities carried out.

Some youth camps are conducted overnight. For such cases, accommodation and food is provided during the course of stay. Although we tend to notice youth camps targeted mostly at kids and teens, there are also camps where families get involved.

All summer camp activities are usually conducted by skilled instructors who are experts in the field. Some of the sports that are much enjoyed by campers are football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, golf, etc. Summer camp activities that are carried outdoors include mountain hiking, rock climbing, etc. In addition to these, there are summer camp activities that involve the waterfront. Swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing, rowing, canoeing, fishing are activities enjoyed by both kids and teens.

If you child hasn’t had any river experience, white water paddling could be good for him or her. If it’s nature they like, especially the greenery, cycling and green walking trials could enhance their summer camp activities.

You may wonder what creative sessions include. Some youth camps provide classes for campers interested in journalism. While the children get a good physical workout from the different outdoor summer camp activities, they also get involved in various craft programs that include painting, beadwork, pottery, sculpting, calligraphy, etc. Some youth camps provide classes for campers interested in journalism.

Having the right camping supplies can make the difference between a fun and relaxing camping trip and a total disaster. Make sure you take your time when packing for your trip to prevent any mishaps. Camping can be really fun but not if you are wet for the entire weekend or don’t have enough food.

Fortunately, getting good camping supplies is easy these days. You can order just about everything you’d ever want or need online with just a few clicks and some electronic order forms. More and more camping supply shops can be seen on the high street as well.

Visiting a camping shop can be really fun for all the family. First of all, you of course get a firsthand look at the camping equipment you are about to buy. What can look really nice on the computer screen might be poor quality in real life. There are also some experts at the camping shops who can help you pick what you need.

You might think about buying all your supplies at a camping store if this is your first trip. If you have been camping for years you might know what you should and should not buy online. Now that I’m more confident with what I’m doing, I order everything online. There are some brands that are better than others, and some supplies which do not need to be camping specific at all. Using a single duvet cover can keep your more expensive sleeping bag cleaner.

The more difficult question isn’t how to get camping supplies, but what camping supplies are you going to need? The answer depends on where you are going. If you are going in your car take as much as you like, hiking with your supplies is harder. After a few trips you will get to know what you always use and what you can afford to leave at home.

Are you ready to take a camping adventure in your RV or Motorhome? If you are, is this your first time doing so?If you recently acquired a new or used RV, you may be wondering how to go about preparing it for you first RV camping trip. If you are, you will want to continue reading on.

One of the first things that you should do, to prepare your motor home for a motor home camping adventure, is making sure that your motor home is serviced and up-to-par. If you just recently bought a brand new motor home, you may not need to have your motor home serviced.Alternatively, if our RV hasn’t been driven for awhile, or if you purchased it used, you may want to consider having a professional RV mechanic inspect it.Being stranded in a broken down RV isn’t very fun at all.

Since you will be taking your motor home on a camping adventure, you will likely be spending your nights sleeping in your motor home. For that reason, you will want to make sure that your motor home is filled with clean bedding.Unlike many other RVers, you may not want to pack only sleeping bags. Many motor home beds are designed to use traditional sheets and bedding. Making sure that your motor home is stocked full of clean bedding will help to ensure that your night are peaceful, comfortable, and filled with sleep.

You also want to make sure your RV kitchen is stocked with all the necessary supplies. To begin with, make sure you pack enough food for your trip. You might consider bringing extra food with you in case you make new friends on your adventure. In addition to making sure that you pack enough food, snacks, and drinks, you will also want to make sure that you bring eating utensils with you. Whether you use paper, plastic, or your home dinnerware, you will want to make sure that you have items to cook your food in, as well as items to eat your food with.

Also important is your motor home bathroom. It needs plenty of supplies, particularly if you are planning an extended camping trip. You want to make sure you stock all the necessary toiletries, health and beauty products as well.It is also helpful to bring an adaquate number of towels and wash cloths. If the RV park you are visiting doesn’t have a laundry facility, you may want to bring at least one towel for each day of your trip.

The aforementioned steps are just a few of the basics that you will want to cover when preparing for your next camping trip. To ensure that you bring along everything with you that you need, you may want to think about making yourself a camping checklist. By making a camping checklist, ahead of time, you are more likely to make sure that you bring along everything that you want and need to bring. Also, packing your motor home in advance of your trip may also make it easier for you to ensure that everything is good to go on the day of your camping trip departure.

Yellowstone and Yosemite are some of the most renowned and most known by outdoor lovers. Camping in Pennsylvania is not as well known as these other places. Pennsylvania, though not on the top of the list has other attractions that you should be aware of.

Most state parks are open seasonal. Pennsylvania has three state parks that are open year round. These parks are Little Pine, Ole bull, and Promised Land. The cold might be a factor for some campers. The state is located in the upper northeast and winters see snowfall and cold temperatures. This can be remedy by the cabins available at the campsites.

At one particular park Promised Land has a 422 acre lake, which fishing is a common pastime. During the winter season ice fishing is also a big hit among visitors. That is not the only attraction during the long winter months. Campers in Pennsylvania enjoy cross country skiing and twenty three miles of snowmobile trails.

The seasonal state parks have just as much to offer. The top seven state parks are Champan, Parker Dam, Gifford Pinchot, Shawnee, Pine Grove Furnace, Prince Gallitzin, and the huge Pymatuning. Each park has a different flavor. Records show that Pymatuning is one of the most visited parks in Pennsylvania. It is by far the biggest state park in Pennsylvania being 21, 122 acres. The park has one of the biggest lakes that is well over seventeen thousand acres.

There are some rules and regulations, just like at any state park for camping. Pennsylvania parks have textbook rules. Such has no unauthorized fires, this is a for obvious reasons. No alcoholic beverages are allowed at the campsites or the state parks. This may be a bad thing for a few campers, though there are plenty of campsites outside of the state parks where having alcohol is legal. On the up side, the state parks allows pets on premise as long as it is a dog, cat or small caged animal.

Another large attraction for campers is the elk ranges. This is state land that the elk are free to roam and graze about. An elk is much bigger then a deer. A typical male elk can reach a thousand pounds.

If hunting isn’t on the menu, but observing wildlife is you can visit an elk range. Elk are larger then deer and males can weigh up to a thousand pounds. You can drop by one of the ranges near your campsite.

If you love the outdoors and can’t wait to get away from the city, then you should consider planning a camping excursion. Camping provides a great platform for a variety of enjoyable activities as well as giving you the perfect chance to enjoy nature at it’s finest. The only thing you need to remember to make sure you next camping trip is a blast is to plan accordingly. It’s best to figure out the exact location you are going to be camping, determine what the duration of your trip will be, and decide on the most convenient way to get there. By taking some time to plan ahead, your next camping trip will can full of lifelong outdoor memories.

The majority of people who take camping trips on a regular basis do it to get away from big-city life and they enjoy roughing it in the wilderness. Many of them only care about the opportunity it gives them to really enjoy Mother Nature’s gifts. But if you want to get the most out of your next camping trip and avoid disaster, you need to take the time to plan it properly.

If you want to ensure that you have an enjoyable camping experience, be sure to get in touch with some of the available camping organizations which can assist you in planning your trip. These organizations also give you the opportunity to meet and interact with some of your fellow campers. In fact, if you are able to find the best organizations in your area, they can provide you with a plethora of camping tips and help you plan some exciting outdoor activities.

Keep in mind that although these organizations can be very helpful, you will likely have to pay a fee for their services. But you should take advantage of the opportunity they offer to help you plan fun adventure trips like canoeing, white water rafting, or rock climbing.

The greatest thing about using a camping organization to plan your camping trip is that they can direct you to the most deeply forested areas where nature provides some of its best scenery. These unique types of settings allow you to experience all of natures creatures up close and personal and make it more than worth the little extra you had to pay.

In addition to selecting your camping location, you also need to pay close attention to the type of camping gear you are going to need. One of the most popular items that campers bring on their trips are blow up beds. If you get a raised air bed, sleeping on a blow up bed in the wilderness can provide a fairly comfortable night’s rest. However, staying safe on your trip goes a long way toward ensuring that you are going to enjoy your adventure, so be sure to bring the correct type of camping gear for the type of trip you are taking. Having the proper camping gear on any camping trip will make it much easier to focus on the fun activities that your outdoor adventure will provide.

Camping can be a truly memorable and unique experience. But don’t take the planning stages too lightly. Spending a few extra hours to properly plan your camping trip can make a huge difference in how much fun you will have on your next adventure.
